In a CSA, keyword being community, the growers and consumers provide mutual support in the production of food. Many farms would have an extremely difficult time covering costs of the farm operation without CSA members. Members are often referred to as “share-holders,” and typically pay upfront before the season begins. Although, many farms allow payment plans. Commitment to a CSA truly builds a more local agricultural system for your community. What’s another benefit? Well, I did forget to mention members receive the freshest produce a on a weekly basis. So, if you want to partner with a farm this year and receive more delicious and nutrient dense foods all season long, check out www.SEMAPonline.org to find a CSA near you.

I HAVE. First there is organic vs. non-organic, now we see Fair Trade bananas as well. Thinking about which bananas you should be buying may have you going bananas as well. I had Jessica Jones-Hughes from Equal Exchange on Radio Brunch to help me decide which bananas I should be buying.

Equal Exchange has created a Big Change since 1986. Their founders envisioned a food system that empowers farmers and consumers, supports small farmer co-ops, and uses sustainable farming methods. Perhaps we should think about why there was a need for Fair Trade among bananas, coffee, and chocolate in the first place? Where the industrial banana farmers given health benefits? NO. Where they paid fairly for their work? NO. Where they given a reasonable amount of hours without being over-worked? NO. Where they safe from chemicals sprayed on the bananas fields? NO. Where they able to make distribution decisions regarding their farm? NO. Okay, I think I get why Equal Exchange chose Fair Trade for banana farmers.
